President says he regrets smear campaign by Maldivian dissidents abroad

MALE, Oct 5 -- President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on Sunday night said that the people were determined to sustain progress in all fields. Speaking at the “Tourism Evening 2004” held at the Maldives Centre for Social Education, the President said that he regretted that the smear campaign targeted at disrupting the tourism industry in the Maldives was being orchestrated by a handful of Maldivian dissidents residing abroad.

The President noted that those persons were engaged in a campaign to disrupt the country’s economy, by spreading misinformation on the mob violence in Male on 12th and 13th August in the international media. He went on to point out that the recent European Parliament Resolution on the Maldives was also influenced by the gross misinformation given by these dissidents.

The President reaffirmed that the government would work towards ensuring the welfare of the people and to maintain the global reputation of the Maldives. On this subject, the President also noted that the government was effectively countering this malicious campaign, and that the results of these efforts were also being seen. He expressed his satisfaction that both the European Commission and the European Council had taken a more positive stance on this matter.
