Commonwealth Secretary General welcomes lifting of Emergency
The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Mr. Don McKinnon, has welcomed the decision by the President to lift the State of Emergency, which was declared following the mob violence in Male’ and surrounding areas on 12th and 13th August.

In a statement issued by the Commonwealth Secretariat yesterday, Secretary General McKinnon said that the Commonwealth was a strong supporter of the democratic reforms announced by President Gayoom in June. He also offered the assistance of the Secretariat to the Government of Maldives in taking its political and constitutional reforms forward.

The 9th June reforms include greater separation of powers including the creation of the office of Prime Minister, the removal of the gender bar in running for presidency, and the establishment and functioning of political parties in the country.
A draft Constitution formulated on these proposals has already been sent for consideration of the members of he Cabinet on 22 October, and it is to be presented to the People’s Majlis after Cabinet comments have been added in.
