The Commonwealth Secretary General welcomes the Maldivian Government�s request for assistance under the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooper

The Commonwealth Secretary General, Mr. Don McKinnon has welcomed the Maldivian Government’s request for assistance under the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation, in the implementation of the President’s Constitutional reforms, proposed on the 9th of June.

He said this during a Luncheon held yesterday, in London, in honour of the Foreign Minister, Mr. Fathulla Jameel. The Commonwealth Secretary General said that arrangements will be made as soon as possible in providing the necessary assistance and also welcomed the Government’s invitation to observe the election process of the People’s Majlis to be held at the end of the year.

He also assured the Commonwealth’s support for the Government’s efforts in bringing about constitutional reforms. Mr. Fathulla Jameel also met with the British Minister of State for South Asia, Mr. Douglas Alexander, yesterday.

The meeting was held at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Mr. Fathulla Jameel provided him a detailed account of the work being done by the Government in bringing about constitutional reforms. Mr. Douglas Alexander welcomed the proposals made by the President in bringing about constitutional reforms and expressed hope that the sessions of the People’s Special Majlis would resume soon, in order to speed up the process of constitutional reforms.

The Counsellor of the Maldivian High Commission in the UK and the Acting High Commissioner, Mr. Adam Hassan and the Second Secretary of the Maldivian High Commission in the UK, Ms. Irthishaam Adam, also attended the meeting.
